Are Your Hormones “Off” ?

Written by Dr. Sandra Miranda, ND

Natural Hormone replacement therapy (AKA Bio-identical hormones or BHRT) for women is a very popular and highly requested therapy.  When I first started practicing years ago, I used to think about BHRT therapy for women in their 40s to 60s.  Now, more and more I am seeing women starting in their 20s having severe PMS, menstrual cramps, endometriosis, fibroids and many other hormonal imbalances.  This may be due to long term stress, long term use of synthetic hormones (like the birth control pill) or just from an improper diet that does not provide women with the proper nutrition needed for our bodies to produce the proper hormones.   In addition, it is estimated that 50 million women are in menopause, and we all know that an estimated 85% of these women suffer from terrible hormonal imbalances at this age.

I believe that an ideal women’s health begins with a proper nutritional and hormonal balance in order to correct many ailments. Along with nutrition, diet, exercise, and stress reduction, supplementation with bioidentical hormones can promote harmony within the women’s body and prevent many other degenerative health diseases that can develop with age.  This is why BHRT is considered an anti-aging therapy.

Bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT) is a vastly effective therapy, especially for women experiencing symptoms of hormone imbalance and hormone deficiency. These patients may present with PMS, peri-menopausal or menopausal symptoms, or other conditions that result from or are associated with hormone imbalance. These include but are not limited to: insomnia, mood disorders, metabolic syndrome, migraines, obesity, fatigue, hypothyroidism, bone loss, uterine fibroids, fibrocystic breasts, skin disorders, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), chronic fatigue syndrome, hair loss, hirsutism, and connective tissue disorders.

Most women who suffer from hormonal imbalances, know intuitively that their hormones are “off”, but they are frustrated when they are told everything is “normal”.  Are you wondering if your hormones are “off”? Are you wondering what hormonal imbalance you may have? Are you convinced that your thyroid is “off” even though your doctor keeps telling you everything is normal? Are you wondering if stress is keeping you sick?

Women don’t need to suffer anymore.  We now have the science to know how to do a comprehensive blood test to find out exactly what hormonal imbalance is affecting women.  Women will only know the extent of their imbalance once all of these hormones get tests: cortisol, estrogen, progesterone testosterone, insulin, DHEAs, TSH, free T4, free T3, and more.
