It feels like we have been dealing with Covid-19 forever.  And I know many of you are sick of talking about this.   But the reality is that it looks like this virus is here to stay and whether or not you are vaccinated, you should be interested in knowing how to decrease your susceptibility to this virus.  Why is this important if I’m fully vaccinated? Because the vaccine’s efficacy will start to wane in a few months…maybe 6 maybe 8.  Nobody knows yet, but at some point, your vaccine will not give you the full protection that you need.

I would like to share with you some reviews that have been presented with interesting facts on how to reduce our susceptibility to covid.   As you read the following, I want you to think about your weight, your blood sugar control, your nutritional status, your diet, and your vitamin supplementation and ask yourself how can you improve on what you are currently doing.

Weight:

  • There was a huge study with 400,000 people which clearly showed that you are “obese” (BMI over 30) you have 2.7x increased risk of infection, 3.8x increased risk of severe disease and 1.6x increase risk of death.  These numbers apply to anyone who has a BMI over 30 no matter how old you are.

Blood sugar control:

  • People with abnormal blood sugar levels have 1.55x risk of severe infection.
  • People with Type 1 diabetes have a 3.9x increase risk of severe infection.
  • People with Type 2 diabetes have 3.36x increased risk of severe infection and 3.21x increased risk of death.

Co-morbidities:  They studied 4 of co-morbidities: diabetes, hypertension, past history of heart failure and obesity.

  • If you have 1 of the above, then you will have 1.79x increased risk severe covid infection
  • If you have 2 of the above, then you will have 2.15x increased risk of death
  • If you have 2 of the above, then you will have 2.59x increased risk of severe infections
  • If you have 3 of the above, then you will have 3x more risk of death.

DIET:

  • People who eat a plant based have a 0.27x risk of severe infection (this means that they are almost 4 x less likely to have a severe covid infection- this is a dramatic decrease)
  • People who eat a pescatarian diet have a 0.41x risk of severe infection (less than half)
  • People who eat a high meat diet have a 3.9x increase risk of severe infection – maybe because of more inflammatory chemicals. It is very clear that high meat diet will increase your susceptibility to severe covid infection.

Vitamin D:

  • If you are deficient in vitamin D then you have 3.87x increase risk of death if you get covid.  Studies also showed that you can’t just start taking vitamin D once you get infected, you should be taking it as a supplement beforehand.
  • People who were taking vitamin D as a supplement (no matter what the dose is) had a 0.41x risk of severe infection (which means less than half).
  •

Vitamin C:

  • 82% of patients with severe infection had low vitamin C levels in blood.
  • 94 % of all the patients in an ICU with covid had undetectable levels of vitamin C BUT again there was no significant benefit to start taking vitamin C once you got infected already, you must be taking it beforehand.

Curcumin:

  • One study with a well-absorbed curcumin given for 14 days to patient already with covid decreased death by 50%.  Maybe this is due to the anti-inflammatory effect.

Omega 3 fatty acids:

  • Again in a study given to people who already had covid, they substantially improved survival by 7x.  Maybe because of its anti-inflammatory effect.

Quercetin

  • In a small study Liposomal Quercetin given at a dose of 1,000 mg/ day (this is a well absorbed quercetin) – it helped to reduce the risk of severe infection by 68%. This was pretty significant so the hopes is that more studies will be done with Quercetin because so far it looks pretty promising.

I thought these results were pretty eye-opening because whether you are vaccinated or not, there are many factors that under your full control that can actively reduce your susceptibility of either getting covid, or having a severe case of covid or being hospitalized or even dying from covid.
