Are You Having Heavy Periods? – Video Blog

Written by Dr. Sandra Miranda, ND

Heavy periods are exhausting and it is one of the main signs that our hormones are out of balance.

Here is how you can tell if you are having heavy periods:

  • Your periods last longer than 7 days
  • You need to change more pads or tampons more than 6 x day
  • You need to change your pads or tampons after only 1-2 hours
  • You are regularly soaking through your clothes on your period.
  • You have to change your pad or tampon during the night
  • You are passing blood clots the size of a quarter or larger.

Why are my periods so heavy?

  • The biggest reason is for an estrogen to progesterone imbalance.  A simple blood test will help you determine if your estrogens are too high or your progesterone level is too low or BOTH which can happen many times.
  • It is important to find out the root cause of your heavy periods because these time of hormonal imbalances can also lead to other health problems such as PCOS, endometriosis, fibroids, andenomyosis, not ovulation, infertility, polyps etc.

What can you do to ease your periods?

The best approach is to get your hormones tested.  If your progesterone is low then taking the right herbs or using a natural progesterone cream with a multivitamin will be the easiest way to fix the problem. If your estrogens are high then you need to detox, detox and then detox some more!

You can reduce excess estrogen by reducing environment exposure to estrogens ie don’t use plastics, decrease the amount of drugs (especially hormones), eat organic produce and meats and eggs.

Ground flax seeds (2 to 3 tbsp per day) can also help you eliminate any unwanted estrogen.
